A 63-year-old Pittsburgh man is recovering well today after undergoing a combined heart and kidney transplant at Allegheny General Hospital, the first such multi-organ transplant performed at AGH since its transplantation program was established in 1987, the hospital announced on Tuesday.

AGH did not identify the man, but Drs. Stephen Bailey and Ngoc Thai directed the surgery on Aug. 30. The patient’s heart was transplanted first, followed immediately by the kidney. Bailey directs AGH’s division of cardiac surgery, and Thai, who specializes in abdominal transplantation, was recruited in recent years from Allegheny General’s crosstown transplant rival, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center along with Dr. Kasum Tom.
